Ten-year-old Klara wakes up alone in her family’s deserted old summer house. Her parents have disappeared. It soon turns out that there’s a boy living in the attic. He claims to have been there for years, explaining that the building is not a holiday home at all, but a sanatorium. He describes the numbered rooms, the bunk beds, the dining room with a serving hatch, and his fellow patients.

The once familiar place becomes increasingly mysterious as the children try to solve the puzzle of the house and their own identities. In this world where the past and present overlap, and where an invisible being is constantly leaving sweets for them in a metal tin, the line between reality and imagination gradually becomes blurred.

The surprising, ambiguous ending leaves the reader with questions that return long after the book is finished.
