Every year, the resourceful, “almost-a-teen” Matylda spends her holidays with her brother and her parents in a cottage by a lake in the titular Chudegnaty. This time it’s going to be different – the little girl decides to remain in the city in order to avoid boredom in the provinces.

As a result of a tangle of circumstances she has to go to the rural cottage, this time with the charismatic Krychna – her blue-haired aunt, bedecked with jewellery, who materializes like a tornado, has off-the-wall ideas and has a simply overwhelming personality. It turns out – in spite of Matylda’s concerns – that life doesn’t have to be boring in Chudegnaty. If grilling sausages on a camping stove still accords with the little girl’s vision of summer in the countryside, then the need to constantly help her aunt, who unexpectedly often gets into difficulties contradicts her vision of summer-holiday monotony. Katarzyna Wasilkowska’s novel sparkles with humour and draws on the best traditions of children’s literature: above all, the author gives her protagonist agency and creates a world in which adults never look down on young people.

Maciej Skowera, translated by Kate Webster
