A gorgeous book about searching for one’s home. Max the Snail – who had to flee from bomb-ravaged Kharkiv – needs one.

So does Zośka the Dog (who ended up in a dog shelter when her owner fell ill), Gertruda the Tortoise (who was left outside a pet shop) and Kostek the Gecko (who a young painter lost interest in). The human they go to live with also needs a home. Some of them carry houses on their backs: shells that travel with them and where they can hide at difficult moments. Others are more vulnerable… The book is a wonderful stepping-off place for conversations about difficult subjects: anxiety, homelessness, abandonment, but also about friendship and solidarity, which can save us during troubling times. The subtle narrative lets us adapt the conversation to the age and capabilities of children. The atmosphere is complemented wonderfully by Justyna Sokołowska’s enchanting illustrations.
