Stolko the Stolem is the hero of this story – a large creature covered in thick fur, with sharp and pointy teeth and nails. He loves stormy days when the rain pours and the wind rushes through the air, and he enjoys rolling about in all the puddles and mud. He only leaves his cave-home at night because, according to the legend, the sun would turn him to stone. He lives with his family: mother, father and grandmother in a loving home where he enjoys delicious snacks like earthworms in toadstool sauce – but still, Stolko feels bored. He’d like to have friends and explore the world beyond his cave. One night, he sneaks out to the forest and meets a little girl… and that encounter is the beginning of a great adventure full of intrigue. Stolko and his friend form a bond that even their differences can’t break – demonstrating that courage, loyalty and friendship are more important than appearances or the judgements of others. The book has received a great deal of acclaim and the first prize (6-10 age category) in the fifth edition of the Astrid Lindgren competition for contemporary books for children and young adults organised by the ABCXXI Foundation.
