When 12-year-old Daniel arrives in Spitsbergen, he hopes to have a cool holiday. It doesn’t occur to him that he will take part in a dangerous expedition in pursuit of poachers killing endangered polar bears.

He travels around Spitsbergen in pursuit of the villains with his journalist aunt, her close friend Birger, 10-year-old Juno, and a marmalade cat. Along the way, he makes the acquaintance of the northernmost island, which for some is the end of the world and for others, the beginning. He discovers the untouched beauty of the polar circle and learns how to care for this natural treasure. The people he encounters on the way show him how important it is to maintain equilibrium in the ecosystem. Because of direct contact with nature – reindeer, puffins and even a blue whale! – the boy becomes convinced that the world needs our sensitivity and empathy. The fascinating and suspense-filled story by Ilona Wiśniewska is graced by Mariusz Andryszczyk’s vivid illustrations.
