Best known for her poetry and paintings, Erna Rosenstein has also authored some very intriguing fairy tales. The Shadow Catcher is a collection of almost all the fairy tales found in the artist’s home archive.
A childlike curiosity for the world and a questioning of the logical order of reality were present in all Rosenstein’s creations. Animals were very important to her, and she treated them on an equal footing with humans. She was attentive to the rejected, the forgotten. She viewed objects as a material trace of memory, part of the fleeting nature of things. Her studio – the small room where she spent most of her time in the last years of her life – was a magical, fairy-tale place.
The Shadow Catcher can be interpreted in many ways. It is infused with the spirit of surrealism, as well as visions from the borderline between reality and dreams, and echoes of the world affected by war and destruction, the fight between good and evil.
