Olaf i Stella

Having been raised in the seal sanctuary in Hel (a Polish research centre dedicated to the protection of seals), Olaf is released into the wild and begins his great mission of independence. He has to catch his own food, learn to avoid dangers, and navigate the difficulties of life in a herd. He discovers the meaning of rejection, but he also encounters great love. A beautiful stranger from the far North, Stella, introduces him to a new world and fresh experiences. Her rejection by the group motivates Olaf to set out on a journey that will completely change his life. His expedition into the unknown is an opportunity to meet other marine animals (gulls, porpoises, cod) and the largest marine predator – humans.

Joanna Jagiełło’s novel teaches tolerance; it shows the real, though not obvious, beauty of wild nature, and helps us to understand the rules that govern the animal world. Magdalena Kozieł-Nowak’s fascinating, painterly illustrations capture the imagination and provoke dreams of experiencing a true Baltic adventure.
