It’s a book about remarkable, smart, strong little girls and women. It’s a book about the path of life, about challenges and suffering, but also about hope and the power to vanquish difficulties and injustice in the world.

The three chapters are three stories. First about Rifka and life in pre-war, multicultural Poland. Then about Ewka (Rifka), her escape from the ghetto and wanderings among the turmoil of war. Finally, about the present, about dilemmas connected to the law and the imperatives that obscure the individual life stories of specific people.

The stories are tied together by the character of Petra, the kind-hearted guardian of the two exceptional little girls. She is their companion, supporting and teaching them, and letting them experience life for themselves.

The book may be read as a fable in which evil always wins, although it contains no shortage of sacrifices and dramatic choices. But it is also a kind of key to understanding other people, to awakening inside oneself empathy and mindfulness for everybody who carries inside them the individual story of their life.

Małgorzata Swędrowska, translated by David French
