For many centuries, people believed that the world and the underworld were intertwined, separated only by a veil of fog. The underworld could manifest itself in different places and times.
Its gateways included springs, crossroads and field boundaries, house thresholds and mirrors. It appeared in fire, and in bodies of water – both those that were bright and vivid, and those that were dark and lifeless. It was found in the clouds, storms and lightning. Rivers and trees were the roads to the underworld.
But the boundaries between the two worlds are as thin as a spider’s thread – dreams, stories and fairy tales, borders patrolled by part-human guides. We are there too, between the world and the underworld, born without remembering where we came from, and dying without knowing where we are going. And yet we sense all of this – that which we cannot touch.
