According to the author, this book came about from her ‘wish to preserve the folktale traditions that unite the figure of the Mother of God with her place in nature.’ Preserving the roots of cultural heritage and nurturing those traditions is at the heart of a community’s bond and sense of identity through generations.

Stories are the channel through which we preserve our heritage and, by word of mouth, legends can be shared from person to person and heart to heart. This is the idea of this book, inspired by the tales the author was told as a child by her nanny, who came from a traditional highlander region of Poland. Through stories and song, she relayed the legends, secrets and spiritual beliefs that had been passed down to her from her own family. The book is not a documentary of these beliefs or a specifically religious text. Rather, the author takes a modern approach to the sentiment and messages vested at the heart of these legendary tales, connecting them to the present. For instance, she urges the reader to consider the wolves that not only live in the wilderness but in the human heart as well and the importance of taming savage emotions. Above all, the message of the book is a humble approach to nature, which offers humanity the greatest wonders that can be enjoyed in this world.
