Books is part of a broader series entitled titled ‘How Things Work’, which aims to present a range of scientific and cultural topics in a way that is easily accessible and appealing to young readers. The book is narrated by Grandpa Ignatius, who leads the reader through the history of book publishing, accompanied by his grandchildren Clara and Charles. At the start of the book, we discover the historical aspects of how the first books came about, what they were made of, when paper was introduced and how it was produced. Then we explore the ‘scriptoria’ of the Middle Ages and examine the printing presses devised by Gutenberg. Finally, we come back to the present day to inspect the workings of book publishing in our age and how it has evolved. Together with our three narrator guides, we rummage through a treasure store of books, genres, publishing houses and printers and get to know the specialists all working hard to deliver books to their audiences. This informative book is speckled with a good dose of humour to tickle younger and older readers alike, along with the fun comic-style illustrations.
