Translator from Polish of both academic and literary works as well as a writer on Polish literary history, with specialisation in the history of Polish women authors. Her background is in both in Russian (University of Durham 1975) and Polish (University of London 1987). In 2006, she was awarded a doctorate by the Institute of Literary Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences; her study on Narcyza Żmichowska was published as a book in 2008. She is the editor of five volumes of essays on Polish literature, and have published many articles. She is an Honorary Research Fellow of the University College London School of Slavonic and East European Studies (recently extended until 31 March 2028). After devoting several years to the translation of Dukaj’s “Ice”, she is returning to research and translation of Polish women.
