He has translated more than thirty books and plays by Polish and German writers such as Hanna Krall, Herta Müller, and Stefan Chwin. He also works as a stage director and playwright: produced works include Mixtitlan, The Death of Atahualpa and Return of the Bedbug. He is a 2013 Guggenheim Fellow and a three-time recipient of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts. Other awards include prizes from the Polish Book Institute, PEN America, the Goethe Institute, and the US-Mexico Fund for Culture. He is the founding Artistic Director of Upstream Theater in St. Louis, and a member of the Texas Institute of Letters.
