Jerzy Sławomirski

(b. 1956 in Kraków) – graduated in Spanish studies at the Jagiellonian University. Then he started to work at that university’s Chair of General and Indo-European Linguistics, and later at its Institute of Romance Studies as a trainee teaching assistant, teaching assistant, senior teaching assistant and assistant professor. He earned his doctorate for the thesis The Double Complement Construction in the I.E.-languages of Europe written under the supervision of professor Witold Mańczak. In 1990-91 he taught general phonetics at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Jagiellonian University and general linguistics at the Foreign Languages College in Tarnów. In 1991-94 he taught at the University of Barcelona as part of a lecturer exchange programme between the Institute of Slavic Philologies at the University of Barcelona and the Institute of Romance Studies at the Jagiellonian University. He is the author of three books and over twenty specialist articles in the field of linguistics and literary criticism, as well as over 70 translations (from Spanish, French and English into Polish and – with his wife Anna Rubió – from Polish and French into Spanish and Catalan). He has lived in Barcelona since 1995. In 2005 he was invited to participate in translation workshops in Tarazona as a “representative” of the Polish language. The second volume of the book “Podróże z Ryszardem Kapuścińskim. Opowieści tłumaczy” (Travels with Ryszard Kapuściński. Translators’ Stories), edited by Bożena Dudko, included his essay about the particular challenges around translating Kapuściński’s work into Catalan.
