Rafał Witek

(b. 1971) – author of novels, poems, educational texts, and radio plays for children and young people; scholar of English.

In 1997, Rafał Witek was a UNESCO fellow in the field of poetry. He writes texts for preschool education textbooks, including the series “Elementarz XXI wieku” (The Primer of the 21st Century), “Elementarz odkrywców” (The Primer of Explorers) and “Wielka przygoda” (The Great Adventure). His works have featured in the magazines “Świerszczyk”, “Twoje Dziecko” and “Dzieci”. He is a member of the jury of the “Piórko” literary competition for children’s novels and a co-founder and juror of the literary competition for primary school students, “Popisz się talentem” (Show Off Your Talent) (organised by the publishing house Nowa Era). He works with the Warsaw children’s choir Mille Voci.

Witek has won numerous awards for his books. In 2004, “Plaża tajemnic” (The Beach of Secrets) won first place in the ZNAK publishing house competition for children’s novels. In 2009, “Julka Kulka…” was nominated for the IBBY Book of the Year Award and received a special mention in the “Duży Dong” IBBY competition. In 2013, Witek received an award in the Astrid Lindgren literary competition for his novel “Klub latających ciotek” (The Flying Aunts’ Club); in 2015, he won the Kornel Makuszyński Polish Nationwide Literary Award for his novel “Zgniłobrody i luneta przeznaczenia” (Rottenbeard and the Telescope of Destiny), and in 2017, his book “Chłopiec z Lampedusy” (The Boy from Lampedusa) received the Leopold Staff Literary Award. In 2022, the book “Ja, Majka” (Me, Majka) received an honourable mention in the Kornel Makuszyński competition, and “Zapiski szczęściarza” (Notes of a Lucky Kid) was named KSIĄŻKI Literary Magazine’s Book of September and nominated in the IBBY Polish Section’s Book of the Year competition. In 2025, “Nawiedzone kolonie” (Haunted Colonies) received the main prize in the 23rd edition of the “Świat Przyjazny Dziecku” (Child-Friendly World) competition.
