Paweł Marcinkiewicz
(b. 1969) – poet, essayist, English and German translator, critic and literary scholar, translatologist, academic lecturer.
He has published the poetry collections “Uciekaj Macinkiewic uciekaj“ (Run Macinkiewic Run, 1990), “Zawieram z tobą przymierze” (I Form a Covenant with You, 1993), “Świat dla opornych” (The World for Dummies, 1997), “Tivoli” (2000), “real,-“ (2004), “Dni” (The Days, 2009), “Majtki w górę, majtki w dół” (Knickers Up, Knickers Down, 2015), “Do śmierci nieprzespanej” (Until Sleepless Death, 2019), as well as the poetry chapbooks “Zostaw noc niech płynie” (Leave the Night Let it Flow, 1989), “18 wierszy o tym, że ogień będzie różą” (18 Poems About How Fire Will Be a Rose, 1990/1991), the collection of literary sketches “Oni przybyli, żeby wysadzić Amerykę. John Ashbery i dwudziestowieczne awangardy amerykańskie” (They Came to Blow Up America. John Ashbery and Twentieth-Century American Avant-gardes, 2015), multiple translations from English and German, as well as papers and scholarly work concerning comparative literature, translation theory and American poetry, mainly by John Ashbery, A.R. Ammons, Robinson Jeffers. The volume Knickers Up, Knickers Down received a nomination for the Silesius Poetry Award (2016).
In 1994 the poet travelled to America, and then spent a few years working in Sweden. In his youth – like his longtime friend Jacek Podsiadło – he started with underground publications. His debut chapbook Leave the Night Let it Flow was published under the auspices of the countercultural opposition group Ruch Wolność i Pokój (Freedom and Peace Movement). In 1997 the volume The World for Dummies received the Polish Cultural Foundation Award. In 2000 he and Jacek Podsiadło were honoured with the Czesław Miłosz Award, which the Nobel laureate awarded on a few occasions; he appreciated the “search for identity in literature” in Marcinkiewicz’s poems. As a professor of the University of Opole, Paweł Marcinkiewicz is the head of the Department of English Language Literatures and runs its Institute of Literary Studies.
