Michał Rzecznik

(b. 1983) – an author of comics, a scriptwriter and drawer, creator of satirical pictures, illustrations and murals, and a member of the Maszin art group. Part of the auteur comics movement.

He and Jacek Świdziński created the blasphemous satirical comic album ‘Przygody Powstania Warszawskiego’ (The Adventures of the Warsaw Rising). He was among several dozen artists whose work went into the comic version of Michał Witkowski’s Lovetown, published as ‘Wielki Atlas Ciot Polskich’ (The Great Atlas of Polish Queens, 2012). He scripted the comics Maczużnik (2013) and ‘Tu powstała Polska’ (Poland Was Made Here, for the Archaeological Museum in Poznań). His own comics include Generator 1000; S/N (2013), ‘Sylwetki i cienie’ (Silhouettes and Shadows, 2019), which experiments with the form of telling a family history, deconstructing the concept of historical truth, and a pioneer work in comic adaptation, Stanisław Rembek’s ‘Dziennik okupacyjny’ (Diary of the Occupation, 2024). This last book is an unusual interpretation of Rembek’s insightful social observations, an evocative record of everyday life in the occupation as seen by the author, a teacher, social and conspiracy activist, involved in hiding Jews, travelling between Warsaw and his home in Grodzisko Mazowieckie.

He has published in the zines Jeju, B5, Biceps, Mydło and 1 Zin, and in the press in Poland and abroad (Gazeta Wyborcza, Pismo, The Guardian, Le Monde). Hs prizes include a Polish Comics Association award in the best comics script category for Maczużnik (2013). In 2022, he received a scholarship from the city of Warsaw in visual art and design.
