Maria Wilczek-Krupa graduated in music theory from the Academy of Music in Kraków. In 2017, she obtained a doctorate in musical arts for her distinguished dissertation, “Estetyka i funkcje muzyki filmowej na przykładzie dzieł Wojciecha Kilara” (Aesthetics and Functions of Film Music as Exemplified by the Works of Wojciech Kilar), written under the supervision of Prof. Leszek Polony. She is a publicist, a teacher, and a Ministry of National Education expert on school textbooks in the field of music. In 2014, she received a creative scholarship from the Minister of Culture and National Heritage. She runs her own educational institutions, including a primary-age music school. Her main areas of interest include film music and jazz, as well as the 19th-century piano music to which she devoted her master’s thesis. She is the author of scientific and journalistic articles, encyclopaedia entries, concert programmes, reports, interviews, reviews and album descriptions. Since 2019, she has been a juror of the KBF competition for the Polish Soundtrack of the Year, and since 2023, the chairwoman of the jury of the National Jeremi Przybora Festival in Białobrzegi.
Wilczek-Krupa’s oeuvre includes three monographs: “Poetyka muzyki filmowej Wojciecha Kilara” (The Poetics of Wojciech Kilar’s Film Music), “Dzieci można nauczyć wszystkiego. 70 lat chóru chłopięcego Filharmonii Krakowskiej” (Children Can Be Taught Anything: 70 Years of the Kraków Philharmonic Boys’ Choir), and “Jedno życie to jest cały świat. O początkach Filharmonii Krakowskiej” (One Life is the Whole World: The Beginnings of the Kraków Philharmonic). She has also written three biographies: “Kilar. Geniusz o dwóch twarzach” (Kilar: A Genius with Two Faces, named the Kraków Book of the Month in March 2016), “Górecki. Geniusz i upór” (Górecki: Genius and Stubbornness, nominated for the Józef Mackiewicz Literary Award), and “Żuan Don. Biografia Jeremiego Przybory” (Żuan Don: A Biography of Jeremi Przybora). For her achievements, she received the badge of “Merit for Polish Culture”.
