Marcin Sendecki
(b. 1967) – a poet and journalist; in the 1980s and 90s tied to brulion magazine.
He debuted in 1992 with the ‘Z wysokości’ (From the Heights) collection. In this first book he exposed the grey reality of communist Poland, using – as the critics pointed out – a poetic technique that owed much to Stanisław Barańczak.
Sendecki’s poetry is laconic, tinged with irony, reflecting a sense of alienation in an imperfect, ideologically hollowed-out world. The works in ‘Pół’ (Half, 2010) were described by Julia Fiedorczuk as poetry of the purest water: ‘total, uncompromising, painful’. In turn, Anna Kałuża wrote that the poems contained in ‘Farsz’ (Stuffing, 2011) addressed the communicative impotence of words – ‘their failed trysts with reality and alienation from the subject’. This critic saw the volume as an expression of consciousness that ‘does not believe in “progressive” aesthetic solutions, nor does it care for pastiche flights into the past’.
Aside from being an author, Sendecki is the editor of poetry books. With Marcin Baran and Marcin Świetlicki, he edited two poetry collections: ‘Długie pożegnanie. Tribute to Raymond Chandler’ (The Long Goodbye: Tribute to Raymond Chandler, 1997) and ‘Żegnaj, laleczko. Wiersze noir’ (So Long, Doll-Face: Noir Poems, 2010). He has also published an anthology, ‘Pogoda ziemi. Wiersze polskie po 1918 roku’ (Weather on Earth: Polish Poems after 1918, 2010).
For some time, he worked in the Przekrój culture section, publishing in such other periodicals as Dwutygodnik and Magazyn Książki.
He has been nominated for the Wrocław Silesius Poetry Award (2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012) and the Gdynia Literary Award (2012). In 2015, he won the Wrocław Silesius Poetry Award for ‘Przedmiar robót’ (Bill of Quantities). He also received the Odra Monthly Prize (2016) and the Wisława Szymborska Poetry Award (2017) for W. He also took the Silesius for lifetime achievement (2022).
