(b. 1945) – a writer, illustrator, and author of novels for children and young adults.
She was born in Poznań, where she lives and works. She was born a Barańczak, and is the elder sister of Stanisław Barańczak. She studied at the Faculty of Painting and Graphic Arts at the State Visual Arts Academy in Poznań, majoring in graphic design. She debuted in 1975 with the book ‘Małomówny i rodzina’ (Taciturn and Family), which caught the critics’ attention at once with its sensitivity, humour and realistic depiction of a child’s everyday life. The most well-known works by Musierowicz make up the ‘Jeżycjada’ (Jeżyciad) series.
Małgorzata Musierowicz has won numerous literary awards, including the Kornel Makuszyński Literary Award and the Janusz Korczak Literary Award, and has been given the Gloria Artis Service to Culture Medal (2009) and the Cavalier’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta (2016). Her work has enjoyed much acclaim in Poland and among foreign translators. Novels from the Jeżyciad series have appeared in German, Czech, English, Russian and Italian.
In Musierowicz’s work, a central place goes to the protagonists’ everyday and family lives, particularly children and young people. The author creates a world full of warmth, humour and unusual observations of reality, in which growing up, friendship, first love and intergenerational conflicts are shown with psychological insight and empathy. The action of most of her novels is set in Poznań’s Jeżyce district. Musierowicz’s writing style joins tight plots with lively dialogue, full of natural conversation, making her books accessible to young readers – and seem authentic to them – while also appealing to adults.
She has gotten involved in projects to promote reading and children’s literature, taken part in numerous meetings, workshops and literary festivals. In her interviews she stresses that literature comes from the need for close contact with a young reader and to observe the world of childhood, and not from a mission or desire to educate.
Her work is distinguished by her subtle reflections on the nature of family and social relationships and her skilful communication of the emotions and problems of her young protagonists in a realistic fashion, never moralising. Musierowicz can join humour and gravity, creating novels where everyday life mixes with adventure and minor conflicts and everyday struggles are an opportunity for character development. The characters in her books learn empathy, understanding for others and the value of friendships, and growing readers can see themselves in her protagonists and their experiences.
Although this writer remains true to realistic novels for young people, her style also has a light touch, the ability to tell multilayered stories and to create sharp, colourful characters. Her prose has a strong sense of values like community, responsibility and sensitivity to others, which means her books enjoy steady interest from readers.
