Małgorzata Kur

An author of books for children and young adults and a graphic artist.

She made her debut with ‘Król zwierząt’ (King of the Animals) for very young readers. As in many of her later publications, the animal world plays a major role. The little protagonist compares his father to animals of various species and investigates who really is king of the jungle.

Not stopping at fictional work that describes the adventures of animal protagonists, Kur went on to seek inspiration in true stories. That led to ‘Kot na medal’ (A Cat Worth a Medal) – a real treat for cat lovers who want to see their pets as heroes. What else to call a cat who saves an infant, or a tomcat awarded a medal by the British King for service to the country?

Małgorzata Kur also writes books for young adults. An example is ‘Rodzina z fotografii’ (The Family from the Photograph) – a story of looking for your roots, tying in to the modern history of Łódź and its architecture.

She is also passionate about the history of cuisine and shares this love with children. Her book ‘Zjeść głowę cukru’ (Eating the Sugar Head) is an illustrated history of cooking, in which readers find out how you used to cook without dishes, how valuable spices once were, and what meals served on spaceships look like.

Małgorzata Kur received first prize in the six years and under category at the 5th Astrid Lindgren Competition for contemporary books for children and young adults. Her A Cat Worth a Medal has been inscribed in the ABC Foundation Gold List.
