(b. 1970) – journalist, editor, author of books for children and adults.
Bednarek graduated in Romance studies, and for many years worked for women’s magazines. She debuted in 2002 with rhyming tales about a gnome called Lenek, published by Wydawnictwo Skrzat in Kraków. After a lengthy break, she returned to writing; “Niesamowite przygody dziesięciu skarpetek” (The Incredible Adventures of Ten Socks, 2015), published by Poradnia K and illustrated by Daniel de Latour, won many awards and became a set text for primary schools. The series about socks was continued in the following years, and each of them – nine volumes so far – became a bestseller. An animated series inspired by the series is also in the works.
Bendarek often creates book series. Apart from the sock saga, she is also writing new volumes of a cycle about a gang of zany hens called Augusta, Hildegarda, Belka and Żaneta; a series of books starting with the subsequent letters of the alphabet; the cycle “Historie spod podłogi” (Stories from under the Floor); and the Dusia and Świnek-Psinek series written with Marta Kurczewska. Many of her eighty-something books for younger and older children are published as standalones – the best-known of these are “Pięć sprytnych kun” (Five Clever Martens), “Pan Kardan i przygoda z vetustasem” (Mr Kardan and the Vetustas Adventure) or “Babcocha” (Grannywitch). Another interesting book – masterfully illustrated by Józef Wilkoń – is “W to mi graj. Bajki muzyczne” (Music to my Ears. Musical Fairytales), twelve tales inspired by the most eminent works of classical music, including those by Chopin, Mozart, Ravel or Bach. She also co-wrote a few books with Jagna Kaczanowska, three of them in the “Ogród Zuzanny” (Zuzanna’s Garden) series. Sometimes she translates French children’s literature, such as books by Marianne Dubuc published in Poland by Wydawnictwo Wytwórnia: for example, “Nie jestem twoją mamą” (2021, in English as Otto and Pio) or “Niedźwiedź i szept wiatru” (2023, in English as Bear and the Whisper of the Wind).
The writer has won many awards. So far, the most decorated title is The Incredible Adventures of Ten Socks, which was nominated by the Polish section of IBBY to the 2015 Book of the Year title, and in 2016 received a nomination for the Most Beautiful Book of the Year title, the Literary Award of the Capital City of Warsaw, and first place in the “Przecinek i Kropka” Best Children’s Book Competition organised by the Empik media shop chain. 2016 also brought Bednarek a nomination from the Polish section of IBBY to the Book of the Year title for Five Clever Martens. 2018 also saw a slew of awards: the book “Nasza niegrzeczna mama” (Our Naughty Mum) was nominated for the Ferdynand the Great Award, and Mr Kardan and the Vetustas Adventure received the Kornel Makuszyński Literary Award from the Ł. Górnicki Public Library “Galeria Książki” in Oświęcim. Finally, “Hip, Hip, Kura!” (Ruling the Roost) received the Yellow Poulaine Award in Kraków, and “Zielone piórko Zbigniewa” (Zbigniew’s Green Feather) won the Book of the Year title from the Polish section of IBBY and the Ferdynand the Great Award.
