(b. 1966, prop. Dariusz Foks) – a Polish poet, prose writer, scriptwriter and visual artist.
Foks is an author who develops along many lines and publishes frequently. His literary work includes poetry and prose, as well as visual/textual experiments, sometimes in collaboration with other artists. Foks’s writing is marked by irony, cultural self-awareness and a conscious break with conventions, both in genres and discourse. He addresses issues of contemporary mass culture and historical memory, using language as a raw material, shifting the line between written and visual forms.
Foks’s literary work is often inspired by cinema, as we can also see in his anthology projects (‘Niewinni kaznodzieje’ [Innocent Preachers] and ‘Zawrót głowy. Antologia polskich wierszy filmowych’ [Vertigo: An Anthology of Polish Film Poems]). In the afterword to a large selection of Foks’s poems, ‘Debordaż’ (Debordage, 2014), Joanna Orska points out traits that connect these poems with Guy Debord’s film aesthetic.
Foks has also done a lot of editorial work and collaborated with many journals. In the 1990s, he served as editorial secretary for Literatura na Świecie. He was editor-in-chief and vice editor-in-chief for Aktivist and Exklusiv. Since 2025, he has been editor-in-chief for Twórczość.
He has received many distinctions for his writing. He took the main prize in the third edition of the Brulion Poetycki competition, organised by the editors of the brulion journal in 1993, and then, in 1994, mentions at the Kazimiera Iłłakowiczówa Award Competition for Best Poetry Debut of the Year. He has also won the Natalia Gall Award (1999) for best short prose, the TVP Kultura Culture Guarantee Award for literature (2005) and the Wrocław Silesius Poetry Award for lifetime achievement (2014). He has also been twice nominated for the Polityka Passport (2000 and 2004) and the Gdynia Literary Award (2005, 2014), three times for the Wrocław Silesius Poetry Award (2011, 2013, 2017), and has been singled out by the Wawrzyn Silesian Literary Award (2013), the Nike Literary Award (2014) and the Upper Silesian Juliusz Literary Award (2016). In 2015, he was given the bronze Gloria Artis Service to Culture Medal.
His works have been translated into English, Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech, French, Spanish, German, Russian, Serb, Slovak, Slovenian, Ukrainian and Hungarian.
