Daniel de Latour

(b. 1971) – a visual artist and book and magazine illustrator; he has designed billboards and an LP album cover.

He finished an art high school in Kielce. His illustrations enrich stories for adults and children, saturating them with colour and a unique sense of humour.

He is the author of “Blok rysunkowy pająka Kleofasa” (The Sketchbook of Spider Kleofas), which serves as a sketchbook, puzzle book and colouring book for children all at once. As an illustrator, he collaborated on books by Justyna Bednarek, Michał Rusinek, Tomasz Stawiszyński, Grzegorz Kasdepke, Artur Andrus, Cezary Harasimowicz, Zofia Stanecka and others. Particularly worth mentioning here are: “Spotkanie z filozofią” (An Encounter with Philosophy) by Tomasz Stawiszyński – a children’s guide to the meanders of European thought, and “Niesamowite przygody dziesięciu skarpetek (czterech prawych i sześciu lewych)” (The Amazing Adventures of Ten Socks (Four Right Ones, Six Left Ones)) by Joanna Bednarek – a book that combines crime fiction and fairy tale to tell stories of exceptional, non-human characters.

He has created illustrations for the magazines “Miś”, “Wysokie Obcasy”, “Przekrój” and “Świerszczyk”. He also illustrated the Polish language textbook “Jest tyle do powiedzenia” (There Is So Much to Say, 2011).

In 2009, he was nominated for the Book of the Year Award of the Polish Section of IBBY for his illustrations for Henryk Bardijewski’s “Wyprawa do kraju księcia Marginała” (A Journey to the Land of Prince Marginal). In 2015, jointly with Justyna Bednarek, he was awarded the “Przecinek i Kropka” (“Comma and Full Stop”) Prize for the best children’s book for The Amazing Adventures of Ten Socks (Four Right Ones, Six Left Ones). In the same year, he received the second prize in the graphic novel competition organized by the Warsaw Rising Museum. In 2016, he was the laureate of the Literary Award of the Capital City of Warsaw for the visual design of The Amazing Adventures… Hs illustrations to this book also reeived the Ferdynand the Great Award.
