Anna Mieszkowska
(1958–2025) – a writer, journalist, theatre historian and documentalist.
She documented the émigré theatre – for many years she collected archivalia on the activities of Polish theatre artists abroad. She worked with the Archive of Emigration in Toruń. Her publications can be found in Pamiętnik Teatralny and Archiwum Emigracji. She wrote entries on people and the history of theatre for encyclopedias and dictionaries. She was also a frequent guest on Polish Radio literary and music programmes.
Her publications were about Marian Hemar, Fryderyk Járos, Hanka Ordonówna, Eugeniusz Bodo and Bronisław Przyłuski.
Her most widely read book was a biography of Irena Sendler, the only biography to date of this woman who is Righteous among the Nations. Michał Głowiński had this to say of Mieszkowska’s book: ‘This biography of Irena Sendler is beautiful and heroic, inspiring and compelling, a woman who waited decades for her Plutarch’. This book has been translated into many languages, and a film was based on it: The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler, directed by John K. Harrison (2009).
