Anna Goc

(b. 1987) – a journalist and reporter.

Since 2012, she has been the editor of Tygodnik Powszechny. Her work mainly includes journalism and reportage. In 2018, she released a long interview with Adam Boniecki. In 2022, she put out her reportage debut, ‘Głusza’ (The Wild).

The Wild is a books about the lives of Deaf people in Poland. The author calls attention to many everyday problems faced by these people, such as the inability to read in Polish, the lack of access to a translator, social ostracism, and the inaccessibility of school infrastructures and other public institutions. Goc consults with academics and talks with those near to Deaf people, to present the widest possible perspective. She suggests solutions, but does so delicately – this subject has been complex for many years, and cannot be ‘solved’ with a single book. The author reconstructs mechanisms of exclusion and tries to present their causes. At the same time, she speaks of language as a tool for creating communities to which access is not easily granted.

In 2015, Goc was nominated for the Andrzej Woyciechowski Award. In 2018, she was nominated for the Tadeusz Morawiecki Polish-German Journalism Award and for the Teresa Torańska Newsweek Award, and received the Grand Prix at the Małopolska Journalists’ Award. In 2017 and 2018 she was nominated for the Grand Press prize. In 2022, she won the Ryszard Kapuściński Award and the Beata Pawlak Award for The Wild.
