Nature educator and conservation activist; he participated in, for example, the defense of the River Rospuda valley. He has published collections of nature reportage: “(Za)piski Wajraka” (Wajrak’s Screechpad, 1995), “Kuna za kaloryferem, czyli nasze przygody ze zwierzętami” (The Marten Behind the Radiator. Our Adventures with Animals, co-written with Nuria Selva Fernandez, 2003), “To zwierzę mnie bierze” (Beast Mode, 2013), “Wilki” (Wolves, 2015), “Na północ. Jak pokochałem Arktykę” (Into the North. How I Fell in Love with the Arctic, 2022) and “W naszej dziczy” (In Our Wilderness, 2023), as well as children’s books including “Zwierzaki Wajraka, czyli co żyje obok ciebie” (Wajrak’s Creatures. What Lives Beside You, co-written with Nuria Selva Fernandez, 2002), “Zwierzaki Wajraka. Jak się żyje w norkach, żeremiach, gniazdach, rzekach, na łące i w lasach” (Wajrak’s Creatures. What’s It Like to Live in Burrows, Lodges, Nests, Rivers, Meadows and Forests, 2014) and “Zwierzaki Wajraka” (Wajrak’s Creatures, 2022), the cycle “Przewodnik Prawdziwych Tropicieli” (Real Trackers’ Guide; “Lato” – Summer, 2011, “Jesień” – Autumn, 2011, “Wiosna” – Spring, 2012, “Zima” – Winter, 2012) and “Lolek” (2017). He has written six graphic novels about nature, published in two series: “Puszcza to mój dom” (The Forest Is My Home) and “Detektyw wróbel” (Detective Sparrow).
He is professionally associated with “Gazeta Wyborcza”, where he has a regular byline. He comes from Warsaw, but has lived for many years in Teremiski in the Białowieża Forest and spends much of the year travelling. Together with director Andrzej Załęski he created the documentary series Wajrak na tropie, broadcast by the TVP (2009, 13 episodes) and the 24-episode series Zwierzęta Wajraka shown by Canal+ (Planete+) in the years 2020–2025. Wajrak has received many awards and distinctions. He was honoured with the title “Przyjaciel Przyrody” (Nature’s Friend) by Pracownia Na Rzecz Wszystkich Istot (Workshop for All Beings) (1993), the Liga Ochrony Przyrody (League for Nature Protection) medal, the title “Przyjaciel Puszczy Białowieskiej” (Friend of the Białowieża Forest) by Towarzystwo Ochrony Puszczy Białowieskiej (Association for the Conservation of Białowieża Forest), the honorary citizenship of Rzeczpospolita Ptasia (Bird Republic). He received the Polish Journalists’ Association Award in the “specialist text” category (1998), the European Hero title (2005) awarded by Time Magazine for nature conservation, the Alfred Lityński Award (2007), the Radio ZET Andrzej Woyciechowski Award (2007). In 2014 he received the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta.
